Official presentation of the new route, the sponsors and the crews

15 March 2018 – We are now exactly a week away from the start of the Coppa Milano-Sanremo, a
historical revival—included for the first time in the Italian Automobile Club’s (ACI) Super Classic
Trophy—of the oldest race in Italy (the first edition was in 1906), which will be ran over some of the
most fascinating and tortuous roads of the Italian peninsula from the 22 nd to the 24 th of March.
Everything is ready for the start of the race. After technical and pre-rally checks at the Autodromo
Nazionale Monza and a parade of the cars through the streets of Milan the day before, the
participants will leave from Piazza Castello for an intermediate stop at Rapallo before proceeding on
to Sanremo and the Riviera dei Fiori.
The preparations for this new edition continue unabated. The organization has already selected over
70 prestigious, historical cars that were built between 1906 and 1976 to participate. The many foreign
crews participating underscore the importance of the race, both in its category, and for its many fans
around the world.
Among the cars in the race, the veteran among the veterans will be a 1926 Fiat 509S driven by HRH
Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, accompanied by such masterpieces as: a 1953 Maserati A6GCS-53
Berlinetta Pininfarina (from the Matteo Panini collection), a 1939 Bugatti Stelvio, a 1952 Aston Martin
DB2 and a 1960 DB4, a 1954 Ermini 1100 Sport International, a 1954 OSCA MT4 1100 Sport, a 1951
Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Villa d'Este, a 1964 Alfa Giulia TZ1, a 1957 ACE Bristol Roadster, a 1957
Porsche 356 A 1600 Speedster and a historical contender making its grand return—a Fiat Colli, which
participated in the 12 th edition of the race in 1948.
The 2018 edition of the Cup has some exceptional partners: Maserati, the main official sponsor of the
event and promoter of the Maserati Tribute, the "race in the race", IWC Schaffahausen, the official
timekeeper, Pirelli, Bosch and Ermenegildo Zegna, to add a touch of elegance to the event.
The new—heavily modified from previous editions—route will touch Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria
in a journey of over 600 kilometres and will include more than 60 total timed-trials: 52 special and 6
medium (with intermediate measurements).
The event gets underway early on Thursday, March 22 nd , 2018 with a meeting of the teams at the
Autodromo Nazionale Monza for technical and pre-rally checks, and a few warm-up laps around the

legendary Formula 1 racetrack before the start of the inaugural parade of the historical automobiles
through the centre of Monza and on to Milan. After a genuine défilé de mode through the heart of
Milan’s fashion district, the cars will go down the world-famous via Monte Napoleone and continue
on to the shadow of the Milan Cathedral, where they will be officially presented to the public.
On Friday morning, March 23 rd , the drivers will queue their automobiles behind the starting line in
Piazza Castello to begin the planned 600-kilometre open-road rally. After traveling through the
countryside of Lombardy and Piedmont, the cars will make their first scheduled stop at the historical
Villa Sparina, near Gavi, before setting off through the extraordinary landscapes of the Ligurian
hinterland for their evening destination of Rapallo, where a nautical themed gala diner will be held at
the port of Carlo Riva’s Yatch Club.
Saturday, March 24 th will be the decisive day for the teams as they face the last time trials. From
Rapallo, they will pass close by La Superba and stop at the enchanting Villa Ottolenghi—once owned
by Count Ottolenghi, the winner of the 1929 edition—at Acqui Terme, before traveling over insidious
curves of the Faiallo Pass, Bric Barton Pass, the Melogno Hill, the Scravaion Hill and the San
Bartolomeo Hill before descending towards the finish line at Sanremo, where they should arrive
around 6:00 – 8:00 in the evening.
The 2018 edition will bestow no less than 20 titles of honor on the participants: the first 10 generally
classified crews, the first 3 classified in each category, the first 3 classified in the overall average-
speed trials, the first team overall and the first under-thirty crew.
As per tradition, the first-place female crew, which besides possibly winning the overall title, will be
awarded the coveted "Coppa delle Dame" (Ladies’ Cup), which is also called "La perla di Sanremo"
(The Pearl of Sanremo). As far back as 1929, there were 5 female crews competing for this award.
Also, the House of Savoy will award a special symbolic prize—the Dynastic Order of the Royal House
of Savoy Trophy in honor of Prince Adalberto who won the 1933 edition—to the crew that exhibits an
outstanding sporting and chivalrous spirit during the course of the rally.
The race will also feature personalities from the "automotive jet set" including Prisca Taruffi, who will
present the second edition of the Volpe Argentata Event (Silver Fox Event), thirty years after the
death of her father, the legendary driver, Piero Taruffi, during the final award ceremony in Sanremo.

Cars built between 1906 and 1973 will be admitted if they have a F.I.V.A. Passport, or a F.I.A. Heritage
certificate, or A.S.I. approval, or an A.C.I. Sport certificate, or belong to a Brand Historical Register.

TENTH HISTORIC REVIVAL – NEWS AND TRADITIONS

We are getting closer to the start of Coppa Milano-Sanremo 2018, an event that took place for the first time 112 years ago in 1906 and now it is back again thanks to its Tenth Historic Revival, to delight all the classic cars lovers.
Plenty of news yet to come. The participation in the race, this year for the first time part of the Trofeo Superclassica ACI – is restricted to a maximum of 100 cars built between 1906 and 1976, including also in this way vehicles of ACI Sport group H. In honour of our prestigious Main Sponsor Maserati (beside IWC and Pirelli) we decided to establish the Maserati Tribute, a challenge reserved to all the Maserati cars built from 1977 until now.
The 2018 edition will reckon on 20 titles, reserved for the first 10 crews of the general ranking, the first 3 classified in each category, the first 3 in the media tests, first stable, first under 30 crew. As we do want to respect the traditions of this amazing race, there will be a prize for the first female crew as well, the famous “Coppa delle Dame”, also known as “Sanremo’s Pearl”.
We are about to write a new chapter of this glorious race that fascinates gentlemen drivers from all over the world since 1906.

It is the “perfect race”, the primary idea behind the whole history of motor racing, to be tackled on roads open to the public,
with absolutely standard cars and excellent tires, whatever the weather. It was on the other hand already for
the Beijing-Paris of 1907: an Itala of normal production, equipped with tires produced in the Pirelli factory in Milan.
At the wheel for seventeen thousand kilometers the noble Scipione Borghese. Immediately after – in 1908 – it was Giulio Sirtori who
led a Züst through America, in the New York-Paris raid. With Pirelli always present.
The Pirelli Superflex Cord tires from the 1920s and 1930s helped to create the legend of motoring on the road: from the Coppa della Consuma,
to the Targa Florio, from the Mille Miglia to the Alpine passes of the Coppa delle Dolomiti. There was also Pirelli at the
Milan-Sanremo Cup, the most classic of the automotive Granturismo that for years was the ideal catwalk for the most
elegant cars in history. There was then Pirelli, there is also today.

The legendary Coppa Milano-Sanremo open-road endurance rally returns to re-ignite the enthusiasm of classic and vintage automobile lovers. 112 years have passed since the first edition in 1906, and seven since the last historic revival in 2011, but soon—from March 22 to March 24, 2018—a brand new chapter will be written in the annals of regularity rally history about this “grande dame” of open-road rallies, which has always had “seductive” power over Italian and foreign teams—both male and female alike. Now, thanks to a group of passionate Milanese entrepreneurs—who are motivated by the same spirit that inspired those pioneering gentlemen-drivers from another era to give life to the Coppa Milano-Sanremo over a hundred years ago—have set themselves the ambitious goal of bringing this historic time-speed-distance rally back to life once again in all of its glorious splendour.

The new course will be over 600 kilometres of the most challenging roads in Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria. Participation will be limited to 100 automobiles built between 1906 and 1973 with a F.I.V.A. Passport, or a F.I.A. Heritage certificate, or A.S.I. approval, or an A.C.I. Sport certificate, or if they belong to a Brand Historical Register. The “Coppa delle Dame”—the sought-after prize that is reserved only for female teams—will also make its return to the Coppa Milano-Sanremo.

The event gets underway early on Thursday, March 22, 2018 with a meeting of the teams at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza for accreditation, technical and pre-rally checks, and a few warm-up laps around the legendary Formula 1 racetrack before the start of the inaugural parade of the historic automobiles through the centre of Monza and on to Milan. After a proper defilé through the heart of Milan’s fashion district, the parade will go down the world-famous via Monte Napoleone, continue on Corso Vittorio Emanuele and on to its final destination at the Sforzesco Castle where the cars will be officially presented to the public.

On Friday morning, March 23^rd, the drivers will queue their automobiles behind the starting line in Piazza Castello to begin the first leg of the planned 300 kilometre open-road rally in which they will confront each other in a total of 70 timed trials that are at the heart of the real challenge of the one the oldest open-road automotive events.

During the first day the teams will leave behind the metropolis of Milan and head out over the back roads that snake through the evocative landscapes of the Lombard, Piedmontese and Ligurian hinterlands—places that have always been the favourite of regularity rally classic and vintage car buffs and of those who prefer tourism at a slower pace. The first leg of the rally will end in Rapallo—one of the most beautiful destinations in Liguria—with a gala diner on the shores of the enchanting Gulf of Tigullio.

Saturday, March 24^th will be the decisive day for the teams as they face the last time trials during their rush from Rapallo to the finish line at Sanremo, where they should arrive around 6:00 – 7:00 in the evening.

The City of Flowers will once again have the privilege of hosting the grand finale of the Coppa Milano-Sanremo at which the winner of the 2018 edition will be declared.

A new page will be written in the history of this glorious race, which was born as an opportunity for a few wealthy automobile drivers to test their skills during an excursion that was, in those days, considered to be an “intrepid expedition” to the sea and the spring colours of the Ligurian Riviera. The memoir of the Coppa Milano-Sanremo already contains a long list of motorsport champions and famous personalities from the international jet set—Prince Adalberto of Savoy, the unforgettable winner of the 1933 rally, for example—as testimony to the fact that this event has always been a unique—and somewhat original—expert blending of sporting competition with the elegance and exclusive charm of a one-of-a-kind open-road rally.

The “Coppa delle Dame”—another particularity of the Coppa Milano-Sanremo—is a special prize for female teams only, which were a rarity in the early days, though the 1929 edition saw five members of the fairer sex cross the finish line in the City of Flowers after a gruelling 300-plus-kilometre race. The cars were yet another. The first among them was the Alfa Romeo, which holds the record for wins thanks to the unbeatable 6C and various configurations of the beautiful 8C. Then there were the extraordinary Lancia Lambda, the Aurelia and the very rare Ferrari 166 Inter Coupé (customised by some of the most famous coachbuilders of the era like Touring Superleggera or Castagna), followed by numerous Fiat Balillas and Topolinos.

A treasure trove of elements of the past from which to draw to create an exclusive, unique event that is able to once again give the teams an opportunity to measure their skills behind the wheel of their own cars, both on the track—as is the tradition—at the legendary Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and on the open-road with timed trials. All of this, together with the evocative departure from Piazza Castello in Milan and the defilés through the beautiful coastal-towns of Rapallo and Sanremo, will be a fitting celebration of the timeless charm of the Coppa Milano-Sanremo.
