THE REVOLUTIONARY COPPA MILANO-SANREMO AND BACK AT THE STARTING BLOCKS

23 – 26 MARCH 2023

The wait is over for the 14th Historical Re-enactment of Italy’s oldest race

Milan, 22 March 2023

Tomorrow will see the start of the XIV Rievocazione Storica della Coppa Milano – Sanremo and back, Italy’s most glamorous and emblazoned race, which will see one hundred cars of great prestige and historic value compete along a revolutionary route of over 900 kilometres through the territories of Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria.

From 23 to 26 March 2023, with the same spirit as always and the same passion of the gentlemen drivers who conceived it in 1906, the crews will be able to compete in 115 special stages, which will make the race even more exciting and captivating from a sporting point of view. The competition will once again this year be the protagonist within the ACI Sport’s Italian Great Events Championship 2023, reserved for classic regularity races.

Among the one hundred cars of great prestige and historical value that will take part in the event, eighty will be vintage cars and twenty modern ones, ranging from a 1927 Bugatti T37 A to a 2023 Pagani Huayra HP, with Italian and international crews. Great expectations for the quartet of Mercedes 300 SL Gullwings, the iconic “Gull Wings” of the Stuttgart House, a legendary car as well as being of inestimable historical value.

New in this edition is the collaboration with Wyler Vetta, the historic Swiss watch brand, which will specially produce a limited series of 300 pieces with the Jumbostar “Milano – Sanremo” chronograph, in honour of the legendary motor race. The watch has a case with a diameter of 40 mm and a matt blue dial with a double-level construction bearing the inscription ‘Coppa Milano Sanremo Est. 1906’ with the symbol of the two 1930s coupés with their unmistakable streamline design. The winning couple will receive as prizes two Wyler Vetta watches from the collection dedicated to the event.

For the Coppa Milano Sanremo, Matchless London has created apparel including the ‘Smith Racing Blouson Limited Edition’ leather jacket redesigned and customised for the event, a tribute to the golden age of motor racing and timeless style. In addition, each crew taking part in the race will be gifted with a ‘Union Backpack’, a practical and functional accessory. Michele Malenotti, CEO M Symbol Group comments: “We are thrilled to announce our participation in the Coppa Milano Sanremo 2023 event as official style supplier. This extraordinary event represents the perfect marriage between a passion for speed and elegance, values that have always been at the heart of Matchless London’s DNA.”

The Coppa Milano-Sanremo will officially start tomorrow, Thursday 23 March, at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, a cult venue of motorsport. Here the crews, in addition to the traditional technical and sporting scrutineering and the always exciting free laps on the track, will have the opportunity to try their hand at 24 new special stages on the iconic track, which will also include the ancient and legendary elevated roads.

The day will end with the official opening that will take place at Milano Verticale | UNA Esperienze, the exclusive UNA Group design hotel located in the Porta Nuova – Garibaldi – Corso Como district.

On Friday 24 March the crews will set off from Piazza XXV Aprile – Milan in the direction of the first time trials, will drive through the villages of Monferrato, and then head towards Asti, where after the parade through the historic centre, they will enjoy a light lunch organised by the Consorzio dell’Asti Spumante e del Moscato d’Asti in the unique setting of Palazzo Mazzetti. The competition will then get to the heart of the matter, continuing through the Langhe territories, before tackling the Colle d’Oggia and the Melogno; along the afternoon route, there will be approximately 70 laps for a total of 6 timed tests and 5 average tests. The second day of the race will end in Sanremo, the famous City of Flowers, with the traditional défilé along the streets of the city centre and the dinner in the prestigious location of the Sanremo Casino.

On Saturday 25 March the competition will comprise 3 timed trials with 26 time trials and 4 average trials; the crews will set off from Sanremo, tackling the Colle d’Oggia once again, before passing through the medieval village of Zuccarello and arriving at the sea for a light lunch in the prestigious setting of the Yacht Club in Marina di Loano. In the afternoon, passing through Colle del Melogno and Pontinvrea, we will arrive in the heart of Genoa, the final destination of the day, where the exclusive gala dinner will take place in a suggestive location: the Genova Aquarium.

“We proudly participate,” emphasises Alberto Campanella, vice-president of Ac Genova, “in this competition that promotes the classic car movement. It is a very prestigious event that involves our region and is also an important promotional opportunity for Genova’.

Sunday 26 March will be the decisive day, which will see yesterday’s racing cars – after a passage in Piazza De Ferrari in the centre of Genova – tackle the climb of Monte Fasce to Uscio, cross the territories of the Portello Pass and Mongiardino Ligure, and then arrive in Milan, where after a spectacular arrival in the heart of the historic centre, the final prize-giving ceremony will be held at the headquarters of AC Milano in Corso Venezia, which this year celebrates 120 years of activity. An important milestone that the Coppa Milano Sanremo is honoured to celebrate, sharing with the renowned club the spirit and culture of the cars that have made history.

Within this fourteenth Historical Re-enactment will be held, as per tradition, the prestigious “Coppa delle dame”, conceived for the first time at the beginning of the last century, thanks to the conspicuous participation of female crews and the intuition of the organisers of the Coppa Milano-Sanremo.

Many, then, are the elements that distinguish and contribute to recall the timeless charm of the Coppa Milano-Sanremo, which over the years has seen great champions of the wheel and illustrious personalities from the international jet set race, testifying to the exclusivity and peculiarity of the race, which combines tradition, competition, elegance and savoir faire in a perfect mix.
